Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) assessment

This is a Bryn Williams Mountaineering course and I will be the course director. During the two day assessment I will do my best to create a relaxed atmosphere in order for you to perform at your best. Hopefully you will finish the course feeling like you have had a good time and also learned some new skills. During the course we will visit different crags as well as a local climbing wall in order to cover the course syllabus which can be viewed in the candidate handbook.  

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM AN RCI ASSESSMENT COURSE?

Once you have completed your training course and gained the required experience you can attend the 2-day (16 hours) assessment course. The days are run from 9-5pm on each day. We will spent time at outdoor crags as well as a local climbing wall.

PRE-REQUISITES FOR RCI ASSESSMENT

The period between training and assessment varies in length for each person and is an opportunity to develop your skills, paying particular attention to any weaknesses identified during the training course. So go climbing and use your enthusiasm to hone your skills for as long as you like.

Before attending an RCI assessment, you must make sure you have done the following:

• Attended 3-day RCI training.
• Competently leading Severe grade (20+ lead climbs).
• 40 led routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
• 30 led routes at a climbing wall.
• 10 led routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
• 20 instructed sessions (10 indoor climbing and the other 10 on outdoor crags).
• Hold a valid first aid certificate.
