Mountain Leader Assessment, North Wales

Mountain Leader Assessment, North Wales

The Mountain Leader Assessment is largely practical with importance placed on prior logbook experience. At Freedom-Outdoors we understand that assessments can be daunting so we aim to put you at ease in order for you to perform at your best. We want to create a relaxed atmosphere where you feel comfortable to ask questions and learn some new skills too.

What should I expect from a Mountain Leader Assessment?

An example itinerary is outlined below but the weather will dictate to some extent the order in which aspects can be covered.

Day 1: We will begin by introducing the week then head out into the mountains with the focus being micro navigation, flora and fauna and weather interpretation.

Day 2: This will be a journey through mountainous terrain in which route finding, group management and emergency use of the rope will be assessed.

Days 3-5: During this time we will be out on expedition. We will travel through mountainous areas focussing on navigation (including bad visibility), group management, expedition skills, incidents in the mountains and water hazards.

There will be individual debriefs at the end of the week.

“Having now been both instructed on my ML training and assessed on my ML assessment by Lou, I would without hesitation recommend her to anyone looking for instruction or guiding in the outdoors. Calm, approachable and a good sense of humour. Lou was understanding of gaps in my knowledge base and helped to encourage me to work on areas I required to pass my mountain leader award. I would love to work with Lou again in the future.”
