Hill Skills in Snowdonia
Freedom-Outdoors is an approved provider to deliver Mountain Training UK’s Hill and Mountain Skills courses. Our Hill Skills course in Snowdonia is aimed at the beginner hill walker and is ideal for those interested in developing a practical understanding of how to plan walks, become familiar with the use of a map, learn about the equipment required and also gain an understanding of the effects of weather, how to deal with emergencies and gain a valuable understanding of the upland environment. The course utilises countryside and moorland areas where the skills will be transferable to many popular walking areas of the UK and Ireland. Duration: 2 days
What does the hill skills in Snowdonia course cover?
As with all of our courses we have a flexible approach to cater for individual needs but examples of aspects usually covered are listed below:
- Weather and route planning.
- Map features and symbols.
- Grid references.
- Measuring distances to calculate walking time.
- Introduction to pacing and timing.
- Use of the compass.
- Navigational strategies.
- Safety considerations.
Is this course suitable for me?
The Hill Skills course in Snowdonia follows Mountain Training’s syllabus. Mountain Training is an organisation which aims to educate and train people in walking, climbing and mountaineering. They have developed a range of nationally-recognised mountain leadership, instruction and coaching awards, as well as skills courses. If you wish to receive a certificate of attendance as well as the other benefits listed below you will need to register with Mountain Training. Registration costs £20 and covers both the Hill and Mountain Skills awards.
