North Wales Ski Touring

Fri, January 25, 2013

This past week has been a fantastic week to live in North Wales. We have had great winter conditions and I have enjoyed some really good days out. From working with the Kent Mountain Centre to take a group up y Garn in winter conditions, to skiing on Foel Goch to the best day of the week-yesterdays ski tour in the Carneddau.

The weather was perfect, very light winds and blue skies and we managed to skin our way up to the top of Carnedd Llewelyn and then Foel Grach with only about 5 minutes of walking to avoid a rocky section. There were some awkward but entertaining gates to get over though along the leat.

We were hoping to ski down into Cwm Caseg but found that the snow was very windblown so made our way down into Cwm Eigiau instead.

The angle was never that steep but the snow was fantastic. The freezing conditions all week had meant that it was still nice and light and fluffy. Unfortunately after the amasing ski down we were rewarded with a long and steep uphill where we had to take the skis off for much of the way, up to Pen yr Helgi Du (833m).

From here we could ski all of the way back to the road! This ski was a total contrast to the one earlier as the track down the mountain had almost been turned into a nice compact piste by previous skiers. Fingers are firmly crossed for more snow before the winters out!
