Lowland Leader Award Assessment

Lowland Leader Award Assessment

Over the course of the two days there will be opportunities for candidates so demonstrate their skills such as group management, route finding and planning a walk. At Freedom-Outdoors we understand that assessments can be daunting so we aim to put you at ease in order for you to perform at your best. We want to create a relaxed atmosphere where you feel comfortable to ask questions and learn some new skills too.

What should I expect from a Lowland Leader Assessment?

Weather conditions dictate to a certain extent how the assessment will run but an example itinerary is shown below:

Day 1:
After course introductions we will look at a leaders responsibilities and weather forecasts in order to gain enough information to plan a suitable route for the day. During the walk candidates will be able to demonstrate basic map work skills, route finding and walking skills as well as any general knowledge they wish to share, such as access information or environmental knowledge.

If suitable there will be an opportunity for some basic night navigation and there will also be a route planning exercise for the next day.

Day 2
We will use the plans from yesterday evening to create a plan for a day walk. Candidates will have leading opportunities during the walk and will have another chance to show the skills from yesterday. We will also look at equipment as well as hazards and emergency procedures.

The course will finish with individual debriefs.
